How to apply Claude Code /usage recommendations with the f key
On a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, Claude Code's /usage lists changes that would lower your usage, one per row. Since version 2.1.305, released October 20, when the footer shows a hint such as f to fix 2 of 3, press f and Claude Code acts on the recommendations it can.
/usage
Here is what pressing f does.
- After any turn in progress ends, Claude Code runs each
/effortcommand shown in a row withoutrunbefore it (for example/effort high). - Claude then gets one prompt with a step for each of the other rows it can act on, and shows you each change before making it.
Rows ending in run and a command, such as run /compact, are not handled by f, so run that command yourself. Other rows, such as trimming a CLAUDE.md, only sometimes get a step; if Claude shows you no change for a row, follow that recommendation yourself.
In f to fix 2 of 3, the first number counts the rows f acts on and the second counts the rows shown. A hint with no of, such as f to fix both, covers every row shown.
While Remote Control is connected, the footer shows no f hint. If pressing f closes /usage with Nothing was sent. Turn off Remote Control to use fixes., disconnect Remote Control, then run /usage again. Per the changelog, the same fixes also appear in VS Code and /doctor.
