How to tell Claude Code auto mode classifier decisions apart in OpenTelemetry events
Since Claude Code v2.1.301, OpenTelemetry tool_decision events carry classifier_verdict and permission_mode attributes. From the event alone you can tell whether the auto mode classifier allowed or blocked a tool call, or whether a permission rule handled it.
- Turn on telemetry and export log events. Start with the console exporter to print them in the terminal.
export CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_TELEMETRY=1
export OTEL_LOGS_EXPORTER=console
claude
- To see which built-in rule a classifier block matched, also turn on tool details. The event then includes
classifier_category.
export OTEL_LOG_TOOL_DETAILS=1
OTEL_LOG_TOOL_DETAILS=1 also records tool input such as Bash commands, file paths and MCP server and tool names, so check where your logs go first. A repository's .claude/settings.json can't turn telemetry on, so set these in your shell, ~/.claude/settings.json or managed settings. The three attributes are only in the changelog so far; the reference docs don't list their value formats yet.
