How to turn off gzip request compression when Claude Code breaks behind an inspecting proxy
From v2.1.300, Claude Code gzip-compresses large request bodies sent to api.anthropic.com even when telemetry is off. It skips compression when it sees a proxy setting, a client certificate or NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, but on a corporate network with a TLS-inspecting proxy that Claude Code cannot detect, compressed requests can get mangled.
If requests fail for no clear reason and there is an inspecting proxy on your network, turn compression off.
// ~/.claude/settings.json
{
"env": {
"CLAUDE_CODE_GZIP_REQUEST_BODIES": "0"
}
}
This also disables compression for telemetry and artifact publish requests. If you register the proxy's certificate with NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, Claude Code skips compression without this variable.
