How to save a Claude Code session to a file with /export and hand it to another agent
Type /export in Claude Code to export the conversation so far as plain text. It's handy context when a session gets long and you want to hand the work to a new session or another agent.
Add a filename to write straight to that file.
/export session-notes.txt
Without a filename, a dialog asks whether to copy to the clipboard or save to a file.
/export
In the new session, tell it to read the file and pick up from there.
Read session-notes.txt and continue the work
You can also skim an export for instructions you keep repeating and turn them into a skill. Anything you pasted into the conversation, keys and passwords included, ends up in the file, so check it before sharing. In the VS Code extension, since v2.1.280, type /export in the prompt box or use the Export conversation command.
