How to recall saved prompts with a number key using /presets in Codex CLI 0.164

Starting with Codex CLI 0.164.0 (October 23), you can save frequent prompts or slash commands in ten slots numbered 0 to 9 and resend them with a single key.

  1. Update first.
npm install -g @openai/codex@0.164.0
  1. Type /presets in the composer, or press the leader key (Ctrl+X by default) followed by p. A menu opens above the composer.
/presets
  1. Press 0–9 to run the input saved in that slot, or to create one if the slot is empty. Use n to create, s to start from your current model, reasoning effort and speed, e to edit and d to delete. Replacing or deleting asks for confirmation, and your composer draft is kept after a preset runs.

Saved slots live under tui.presets in config.toml, so you can also write them by hand. Each key is a single digit, input is required, and label is an optional short name shown in the menu.

[tui.presets.1]
input = "/model --reasoning high"
label = "high reasoning"

[tui.presets.2]
input = "Check the current changes before I commit"

input is limited to 8,000 UTF-8 bytes and can't be a shell command starting with !. Rebind the menu shortcut in /keymap; its config key is tui.keymap.chat.open_presets. This isn't in the docs yet; it comes from the changelog and the open-source repository's pull requests.
