How to check and restart the Codex CLI background server with /daemon
Codex CLI hands local work to a background server that Codex manages. Since 0.163.0 (October 15) you can restart that server from inside a session with /daemon. Use it when the server misbehaves, or when you've updated the CLI but the server is still running the old build.
- Type
/daemonin the session. - Codex shows the server connection and the available actions. You can install the latest public stable release or use the current CLI build for the local server.
- Confirm the restart. Codex warns about work the restart could interrupt, restarts the server, and reconnects automatically.
Confirming an update exits Codex, so running work may be interrupted. When the session is connected to a remote server, /daemon can't manage it; manage the server on its host. To start and stop the server outside a session, use the CLI commands.
codex remote-control start
codex remote-control stop
If you're below 0.163.0, update first.
npm install -g @openai/codex@0.163.0
