How to turn off the Claude Code advisor for a session, or disable it entirely with an environment variable
Once you pick an advisor in Claude Code with /advisor opus, it is saved to your user settings and carries over to later sessions. Turning it off for now and blocking it for a whole team are two different steps.
To turn it off for this session and clear the saved default, type this inside the session. Choosing No advisor in the /advisor picker does the same.
/advisor off
To disable the advisor tool entirely, set an environment variable. The /advisor command disappears and any saved advisorModel is ignored. A --advisor flag left in a script is still accepted but does nothing, so nothing breaks.
// ~/.claude/settings.json or managed settings
{
"env": {
"CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_ADVISOR_TOOL": "1"
}
}
Toggling the advisor does not invalidate the prompt cache, so switching mid-session does not cost you a fresh cache write. The variable appeared in the v2.1.300 changelog on October 14.
